The self-styled Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis, known more often as CAMERA, is a lobbyist organization that seeks to push a heavily pro-Israel, pro-Zionism agenda by influencing the major US media outlets. It was founded in 1982 by Winifred Meiselman in response to what it claimed was biased coverage in the Washington Post's coverage of the the Israeli invasion of Lebanon [1] and has since engaged in heavy lobbying of media organizations, successfully obtained hundreds of pro-Israel changes to news articles, and smeared journalists that criticize Israel or portray Palestine or the Palestinion cause in a positive light.[2] CAMERA has also launched public boycott and smear campaigns against media organizations it perceived to be insufficiently obsequious to its demands or overly critical of Israel.[3]
New York Times[edit | edit source]
CAMERA has a billboard that is directly visible from the editorial offices of the New York Times which it has often used to criticize the paper and its coverage, even going so far as to use the billboard to publicly accuse the NY Times of antisemitism or supporting Hamas when it disagrees with the Times' coverage or reporting.[4][5]
Joe Kahn, the executive editor of the New York Times, has reported that he often "dissected newspaper coverage" with his father, long-time CAMERA board member Leo Kahn.[6]
