Gaza Strip

From Palepedia

The Gaza Strip is a narrow territory on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is land locked by Israel to the east and north, Egypt to the southwest, and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. The region is approximately 365 square kilometers (141 square miles) in size. After the 1948 Arab-Israeli War (Nakba), Egypt administered the Gaza Strip, and a significant population of Palestinian refugees settled there as a result of ongoing displacement and population growth; examples of such camps include: Jabalia Refugee Camp, Nuseirat Camp, Shati Camp and many more. [1]

In the Six-Day War of 1967, Israel captured the Gaza Strip from Egypt, along with the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, and the Sinai Peninsula. The occupation of the Gaza Strip by Israel marked the beginning of a period of ongoing tensions and conflicts. Due to these conflicts and lack of stability and safety within the strip Israel commenced its disengagement from Gaza also known as "Hitnatkut", withdrawing its settlers and military forces from the Gaza Strip and evacuating its citizens.[2]

Wars and Conflicts:

Gaza has faced a plethora of conflicts since Israels disengagement as it has continuously been the target of Israeli military airstrikes and ground incursions.

They have also faced several attempts at population control also described as "mowing the lawn" by Israeli officials, which includes the use of brute force, illegal weaponry and disregard for international law. [3]

Such operations include:

Operation Cast Lead (2008-2009)

Operation Pillar of Defense (2012)

Operation Protective Edge (2014)
